As part of our local history topic, Year 6 walked to their local iron ore mine to learn more about the influence of mining in their locality. They noticed how ‘red’ parts of the area is and recalled the ‘red men of Cumbria’. During our visit, we saw and handled some real authentic objects from mining. We also learned about local artists whose are was inspired by our mining heritage and chose our favourite piece of artwork. Additionally, we realised how much art is embedded within our locality and that we need to be more observant to notice these. We became historians by carrying out research using authentic historical documents. Finally, after looking at banners from the past, we designed our own to represent our mining heritage.
