Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Responsible to: Headteacher / SENCO / Class Teacher
Salary Grade: PCD8i (£32,597(B) FTE) pro rata
Hours: 30hrs/week, Term Time Only plus INSET days (39 weeks per year)
Location: St Bridget’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery

Main Purpose of the Role
To work collaboratively with teaching staff to support teaching and learning across the school, helping pupils to achieve their full potential academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. The HLTA will complement the professional work of teachers by taking responsibility for agreed learning activities, covering classes when required and delivering targeted interventions to individuals and groups of pupils.
The post-holder will actively support and uphold the Catholic ethos and values of the school.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Support the planning, preparation and delivery of learning activities across the primary age range.
- Deliver learning activities to individuals, small groups and whole classes under the direction of teaching staff.
- Lead whole-class teaching during planned or short-term teacher absence.
- Adapt learning activities to meet the needs of all pupils, including pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils.
- Support pupils’ literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
- Use effective behaviour management strategies in line with school policy.
- Promote high expectations and positive attitudes to learning.
- Support the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning.
- Monitor and assess pupils’ progress and provide feedback to teachers.
Pupil Support and Wellbeing
- Build positive relationships with pupils based on trust, respect and encouragement.
- Promote pupils’ emotional wellbeing and personal development.
- Support the school’s inclusive approach to learning and behaviour.
- Encourage pupils’ independence and resilience.
- Support pupils during break-times, lunchtimes or educational visits when required.
Professional Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively as part of the wider school team.
- Contribute positively to the Catholic life and ethos of the school.
- Attend staff meetings, training and professional development activities.
- Liaise effectively with parents/carers and external professionals when appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow safeguarding procedures at all times.
- Support school events, enrichment opportunities and wider school life.
Safeguarding
- Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Follow all school safeguarding, health and safety and behaviour policies.
- Report concerns in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance.
