This year, Year 5 has chosen the Coastguard as our class charity.

To help us understand all the wonderful work they do, we had a visit from a Coastguard rescue officer. They explained their important role and shared lots of interesting facts. We learned that there are 18 stations around the coast of England, with 293 teams made up of both volunteers and people who do it as their full-time job.

We also found out that if you ever need their help, you can call them by dialling 999. The Coastguard rescues people from many dangerous situations, including mud, sand, cliffs, the sea, lakes and rivers. They even have a helicopter that can rescue people from ships if they are ill.

One of the highlights of the visit was getting to sit in the Coastguard vehicle. We listened to the sirens and had a go at practising how to throw a rescue rope.

We all really enjoyed the experience and learned so much about the amazing work the Coastguard does!
