Sugar Investigation: Orange Juice vs Coca-Cola!
This week, Year 6 scientists have been busy investigating the amount of sugar in freshly squeezed orange juice compared with Coca-Cola Original.
Before starting the experiment, the children learned how to devise a fair test. They began by writing a clear investigation question, followed by a hypothesis and a prediction about which drink they thought would contain more sugar. There were lots of interesting ideas and great scientific reasoning! The class then identified the independent variable (the type of drink), the dependent variable (the amount of sugar) and the constants that needed to stay the same. This helped ensure the investigation was valid, reliable, and accurate, so the results could be trusted and a fair decision could be made at the end. Working in small groups, the children carefully carried out the test, recording their observations and measurements and supporting one another like real scientists. Teamwork, discussion and problem-solving were key parts of the investigation. Now we’re very excited to analyse the results and find out… was their prediction correct? What do you think: will the sugar content be higher in orange juice or Coca-Cola?
