As part of British Science Week Year 1 had a scientific enquiry based on this year’s theme of ‘Connections’. We learnt how sound travels in ‘sound waves’.  We created cup and string telephones. We investigated if sound could travel along the string to send a message.  We started with measuring 1metre of string. We were impressed to find out that it worked. We discussed that the sound waves vibrated along the string into the other cup. We found that when listening in the other cup , the cup acted like a speaker, making the sound louder.  Following this we explored investigating if the sound could travel along longer lengths of string.  If we were investigating further we had the idea of changing the type of string used or the size of cup to see how that changes the result. It was great fun investigating sound and making connections with how it all worked.
