For World Book Day, Year 4 studied the poem ‘Caged Bird’ by Maya Angelou. First we found out about Maya Angelou, which helped us understand the poem. After reading the poem together, we discussed the central themes and messages of the poem and the different poetic devices and vocabulary used to create different moods. Next, we worked with a parter to read the poem in preparation for a performance. We also responded to the poem through art, with the aim of capturing the themes and moods of the poem pictorially and using colour to express these emotions. Finally, we ended the day by sharing stories with the children in Nursery.
