Y6 had a great day out discovering more about the history of slavery and the sugar trade at the Rum Story.  They learnt about the wealthy Jefferson family who traded from their office in Whitehaven and used the sugar which was farmed by slaves on plantations in Antigua to make rum. After looking at the exhibition, they took a tour of the historic harbour in Whitehaven. Our guide Phil, told us all about the attempted raid on the harbour by John Paul Jones and that Whitehaven was once the second busiest port in Britain. An extremely interesting and informative day out which really bought to life the history work which Y6 have been doing in the classroom.
