Today, Year 5 enjoyed a practical and engaging World War II workshop.

They began by listening to a radio speech by Winston Churchill announcing the start of the war, played through an old-fashioned radio. The children learnt that very few families owned televisions at the time, so radio was the main source of news. Families would gather around the radio to hear important updates about the war.

The pupils then took part in a round-robin of activities. They learnt about rationing and discovered how people managed to prepare meals using only a few ingredients. They also made rugs out of scraps of material – a common evening activity for families as a way to keep themselves entertained.

The workshop also included listening to the sound of an air raid siren, and the children learnt about how families would take shelter in air raid shelters when the siren went off.

To finish, they learnt the Lambeth Walk, a popular dance from the wartime era, bringing the day to a lively and memorable end.
