This term in Science, Year 5 have been learning all about mechanisms, with a special focus on levers. We discovered that levers are force multipliers, meaning they help us do tasks more easily by giving us a mechanical advantage. We looked at everyday objects that use levers, such as scissors, pliers, pedals, brakes, and wheelbarrows, and discussed how the use of levers in these tools helps us apply less effort to move or lift things. We even made our own levers in class! Through our investigations, we learned that all levers have four key parts: a fulcrum (or pivot), an arm, an effort, and a load. It was a fun and practical way to see science in action!
