Year 5 have been learning about air resistance as part of their topic on forces in science. To help them understand this concept better, they conducted two experiments. First, they walked around the playground holding a large piece of paper to see if they could feel the force of the air resistance. Next, they ran with the paper to see if they could feel the air resistance more, which they did. In the second experiment, they dropped two pieces of paper at the same time—one crumpled and one flat—to see which one would reach the ground first. They discovered that the flat piece of paper, with its larger surface area, experienced more air resistance, which caused it to take longer to fall to the ground.
