Year 5 had a great time at the Beacon where we learned all about World War 1 and took part in a County initiative “A Brave New World”. We studied artefacts from the War, made poppies from plastic bottles and looked around the WW1 exhibition. After lunch we took a wet walk to the archives in town. The oldest document that we saw was 323 years old. We learnt about all of the precious documents that they held and preserved. Abraham Acton was a WW1 hero who saved the lives of two men who lay injured in ‘no man’s land’. He was awarded with the Victoria Cross medal of honour. He was born and lived in Whitehaven!
