As part of their history topic, Year 6 have been learning about Britain's connections to the slave trade and the Caribbean and it’s impact on trade and commerce. The Rum Story tells the story of how Whitehaven was once a bustling seaport connected to the Jefferson-owned estate in Antigua and enslaved people from West African villages and the impact this had on the locality. We listened to fascinating historical stories about pirates and smugglers, Nelson’s navy and jazz age gangsters. Who knew Whitehaven was once a hubbub for so much mischief and business!
